The Unlock the Potential of Apprenticeships event, held Thursday 6th February at NRC Causeway Campus, brought together industry leaders, educators, and apprentices to highlight the transformative impact of apprenticeships in developing skilled workforces.
The event, held during the Department for the Economyโs NI Apprenticeship Week, was a collaborative initiative between Causeway Chamber, Northern Regional College (NRC), North West Regional College (NWRC), and supported by Labour Market Partnership Causeway Coast and Glens, provided valuable insights into the qualification landscape and the wide-ranging opportunities available through apprenticeships and higher-level apprenticeships.
A morning of insight and inspiration
Attendees started the day with a networking buffet breakfast, followed by an engaging programme of speakers and panel discussions. The event was opened by Helen Hampsey, Assistant Curriculum Director for Teaching & Learning at NRC, who welcomed guests to Causeway Campus. The morning continued with keynote insights from Camilla Long, Bespoke Communications, who hosted the event.

- Engineering & Manufacturing โ Hutchinson Engineering, Terex, and Sperrin Metal Storage Solutions discussed their apprenticeship models and workforce development strategies.
- Developing Your Team through Apprenticeships & Traineeships โ ids Chartered Accountants LLP, Lodge Hotel, and others demonstrated the impact of apprenticeships across sectors.
The event also highlighted additional training and skills development opportunities available through educational institutions, local partnerships, and business engagement initiatives.
Driving Skills and Growth in the Region
Speaking at the event, representatives from local businesses and colleges reinforced the importance of apprenticeships in bridging the skills gap, driving business innovation, and creating career pathways for young people and professionals looking to upskill.
Closing the event, Katie Devenney from the Department for the Economy (DfE) thanked all speakers, businesses, and attendees for their participation, reaffirming the commitment to developing apprenticeship opportunities and fostering workforce development in Northern Ireland.
